The recent buzz is that hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius make such little engine noise that they are almost silent to pedestrians causing an increase in car accidents. Due to the lack of noise generated by "green" engines, pedestrians and bicyclists are unable to hear the vehicles approaching, turning or moving in reverse when backing up.
To combat the problem, car makers have created technology to funnel fake engine noise with speakers outside the front and rear of the vehicle and to generate engine noise inside the car to make it sound more like a regular automobile when accelerating and turning.
