Toddler in Coral Springs Drowns in Unfenced Pool

Swimming Pool 5.jpgA Coral Springs toddler drowned in a family pool that was unfenced. The family members that were watching the child became distracted and the child was able to enter the water. The toddler was discovered by his siblings after he had been in the water for some five (5) minutes. The child was rushed to the hospital but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Florida law mandates that a fence or some type of barrier be placed around all pools built after the year 2000 to prevent drownings. For unknown reasons, this pool did not have that fence/barrier in place. It is not known when the family's home was constructed.

During the summer months it is crucial to maintain optimal safety measures in and around pools and swimming areas. The Fort Lauderdale drowning victim's lawyers at our firm are happy to answer all questions regarding pool safety or to evaluate a claim.

Florida Leads Country in Number of Drowning Deaths

diving board.jpgFlorida leads the country in the number of drowning deaths in children five (5) years of age and younger. Traditionally, May and June are the months with the highest number of drowning and near drowning incidents. Sadly, these incidents occur in home pools and pools at local hotels and motels as well as in canals and lakes. According to reports, parents are most distracted when at home which is cause for the large number of reports there.

In order to prevent drowning accidents, those who own a pool should invest in a child fence that surrounds it and extra locks for sliding doors and windows that lead to the pool. The best advice is to enroll children in drowning prevention courses and swimming classes.

Should you or a family member require assistance in evaluating a drowning case or near drowning case, please contact our Fort Lauderdale drowning lawyers for legal advice.

5 Year Old Drowns in Miami Pool - Left Unattended by Family Member

Swimming Pool 4.jpgA five (5) year old North Miami girl drowned when her grandmother who was watching her left her alone. The grandmother decided to go to the grocery store to do some shopping and allowed the five (5) year old to stay home without her. When the grandmother returned she found the child floating in the pool. There was no protective fence surrounding the pool which more likely than not enabled the child to climb in. The grandmother is being charged with manslaughter.

This is such a sad story. As a Fort Lauderdale drowning accident attorney, this horrific incident is a perfect reminder that all pools must be surrounded by protective fencing so that infants, toddlers and children who cannot swim are unable to gain access to the pool.

Three Delray Children Hospitalized After Nearly Drowning in Neighbor's Pool

pool 3.jpgThree young children in Delray Beach wandered away from their home and nearly drowned when they fell into a neighbor's murky pool. It is still unclear how the children were able to gain access to the neighbor's pool and whether they were being adequately supervised at the time. The children were taken to Bethesda Memorial Hospital where they remain in critical condition.

Another neighbor who knows how to perform CPR was called to the scene. She performed CPR on all three of the unconscious children while the paramedics were called. Her heroic efforts are what saved these children's lives. A criminal investigation is pending regarding this near drowning incident.

Child Drowns in Hollywood Pool

pool 2.jpgOn Friday afternoon, a three year old child was found floating in a pool in Hollywood. According to authorities, the child's family members fell asleep and were napping which permitted the little girl to exit the apartment where she was staying and find the pool.

The girl drowned when she fell into the pool. Although police were called, all attempts to revive the child were unsuccessful. Police continue to investigate this drowning accident. This incident calls into question why a baby fence was not erected to surround this pool.

All parents reading this story should be reminded how important it is to maintain constant supervision of children when water is involved. Sadly, this incident like many drowning and near drowning accidents can be prevented with acute attention to safety.

Prevent Accidental Drownings In Florida Pools

waterdanger.jpgMore than 1,500 children die in the United States each year due to drowning. Experts estimate that there are four times that many hospitalizations for near-drowning and about 14 times that amount in emergency department visits for submersion incidents.

Can you watch your children every single second of every day? Of course not. But vigilance in watching them is the foundation upon which all other preventive measures are built. Always be sure someone is watching -- physically watching and not distracted by other task-- at all times.

Most drownings and near-drownings for children under age 5 occur in a backyard pool. It is the second leading cause of death for children in most states. In a few states, including Florida, California and Arizona, drowning is the leading cause of death for children.

Fort Lauderdale Child Nearly Drowns In Hot Tub

The near-drowning of a child in a backyard hot tub will likely be ruled an accident, police said today. A five-year-old boy was rescued after being trapped underwater, his arm stuck in a hot tub drain in his family's backyard.

Investigators are focusing on a drain cover that was not correctly in place.

Thankfully, the boy was released from the hospital with only minor bruises.

The incident gave safety experts an opportunity to highlight the dangers of pool drains without the grief and tragedy that too often accompany such warnings. The suction from pool and hot tub drains can trap hair, limbs and jewelry if drain covers are not properly placed.

Fort Lauderdale Pool Safety - A Larger Concern Because Of Foreclosures

florida-boating-accidents-lawyers2.jpg

With kids out of school and looking for something to do, summertime typically sees a jump in drowning incidents, especially with all the pools, canals, lakes and other waterways crisscrossing our region.

This summer, we have even more reason to worry, thanks to the recession. The foreclosure crisis has pounded South Florida, leaving many neighborhoods dotted with abandoned homes. Not only are these vacant properties an eyesore, and a potential risk from debris in a hurricane, but many come with murky, unsupervised pools that prove irresistible for some curious little ones not under the watchful eye of adults.

The dangers proved all too tragic for a Fort Lauderdale woman whose 5-year-old daughter was playing in her backyard when she wandered to the vacant home next-door and drowned in the pool.
