disney.jpgWalt Disney World monorails were out of service briefly after a monorail pilot received a minor electric shock while flipping a switch, authorities said. The pilot was mildly shocked in the arm while switching on a beacon that identifies the beam the monorail is traveling on, a fire official and Disney said. He was taken to Florida Hospital Celebration Health by ambulance, where he was treated and released. Park guests were removed from the area while the pilot was being treated on the platform. The National Transportation Safety Board said its investigation will last until at least this fall. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Disney for four safety violations and fined the company $35,200. Holiday Car Accidents: "Near" not "On" Holiday

christmas tree.jpgA recent study found that most holiday car accidents occur the day before or after a holiday and not on the holiday itself. In fact, the days preceding a holiday pose the greatest threat for accident fatalities.

The study found that the typical holiday had a low incidence of car accidents involving crashes and fatalities because most holiday travelers have met their destination and tend to remain there. For example, Thanksgiving Day in 2008 was the thirteenth lowest day for serious car crashes. The increased shopping caused by the discounts given on "Black Friday" makes it a particularly dangerous time to be on the roads.

Dade County School Bus Drivers Told No Text Messaging While Driving

Car Accident 8.jpgDade County school bus drivers may be banned from texting on their iPhones and Blackberrys while on the roads except in emergency situations. If the proposal passes it would apply to all county employees driving district owned vehicles.

This proposed ban comes after a recent study showed that truck drivers sending text messages on the road were 23 times more likely to have a truck accident or nearly crash than those drivers that were distracted while driving. 19 states (Florida not included) have banned text messaging completely while driving in order to reduce the number of fatal car accidents.

Florida: The Most Deadly State for Pedestrian Accidents

crossing street.jpgResearchers at the Transportation Policy Partnership developed the Pedestrian Danger Index (PDI) in order to establish a level playing field for comparing metropolitan areas based on the danger to pedestrians. The PDI corrects for the fact that the cities where more people walk on a daily basis are likely to have a greater number of pedestrian fatalities, by computing the rate of pedestrian deaths relative to the amount of walking residents do on average.

The PDI shows that the most dangerous places to walk are those that fail to make smart infrastructure investments that make roads safer for everyone. The most dangerous metropolitan areas in the United States for walking in 2007-2008 were all in Florida - Orlando, Tampa, Miami and Jacksonville. In other words, the few people who do walk in Florida face a relatively high risk of being killed by in a car accident by traffic.

Ft. Lauderdale Car Accident - Mazda Miata Wedged Under Tanker

flipped_truck.jpgA Ft. Lauderdale woman says it's miraculous that she walked away from a crash that left her sporty Mazda Miata wedged under an oil tanker truck that was making a turn into Port Everglades.

The accident took place along the 2400 block of S. Federal Highway just north of Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.

The small black convertible car was completely stuck underneath the BV Oil Company tanker truck, the top of the car crushed under the weight of the truck.

The woman, 48, was taken to Broward General Medical Center with minor injuries. She was pulled out of her vehicle by an off-duty Miami-Dade firefighter..

Obviously, this is a reminder to pay attention while driving and to yield to larger vehicles.

florida_car_accident_lawyer.jpgAccording to news reports, a 51-year-old male died when a truck he was driving veered off the road and struck a tree head-on. The victim was a lieutenant for the Martin County Fire Rescue Station 22 - the same department that responded to the fatality.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the man apparently over corrected when he veered off the road. The FHP also reports the roadway was wet at the time and that may have contributed to the accident, which remains under investigation.
